For the first time, secondary school education will be available directly within the riverine communities of Orealla and Siparuta, thanks to a newly announced construction project.
This development, which comes with a price tag of $197 million, aims to significantly enhance educational opportunities in these remote areas.
The new school will feature modern amenities, including state-of-the-art classrooms, a Home Economics lab, an Information Technology lab, and staff rooms.
The project is expected to be completed within eight months, promising to provide students with access to secondary education without the need to travel to the coast.
The construction of the secondary school is a fulfillment of a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali to ensure equitable access to education for all students, regardless of their location.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand emphasized that the project will also alleviate financial burdens on parents who previously had to cover accommodation and other costs associated with sending their children to schools outside their communities.
Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud acknowledged the efforts of the Orealla and Siparuta Village Council for their advocacy and support, which were crucial in bringing this project to fruition.
Residents of the two communities have expressed their gratitude and enthusiasm for the new educational facility, highlighting how it will benefit both students and the wider community.
Currently, there are 26 schools under construction across Guyana, with a particular focus on Amerindian and other hinterland communities.
The new Orealla and Siparuta secondary school represents a significant step in improving educational infrastructure and opportunities in these areas.
