New President of Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Aims to Revive the Sport

January 17, 2025

Yalema Phillips, the newly elected president of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA), is committed to steering the sport towards smoother waters and restoring its prominence.

After swimming was suspended as a ‘Core Sport’ by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in 2024, Phillips is focused on improving the sport’s status and promoting its growth in Guyana.

In an interview, Phillips shared that GASA is actively engaging with the relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues that led to the suspension and hopes to see a positive outcome.

She emphasized the importance of building strong relationships to promote swimming in Guyana.

Phillips, who previously served as the vice president under former president Dwayne Scott, outlined her plans for the future.

Her primary focus will be on athlete development, securing funding, and ensuring good administration within GASA.

In September 2024, the NSC’s decision to strip swimming of its core sport status came after concerns over certain practices within the association.

However, sources close to the matter revealed that World Aquatics has since met with the NSC, Guyana Olympic Association, and GASA to explore ways of overcoming the current impasse.

Phillips is confident that with a unified approach and a focus on development, swimming in Guyana will navigate a successful path forward.
