A key stakeholders consultation has commenced to develop the National Malaria Programme Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2030, with a strong focus on eliminating malaria in Guyana.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, addressed the meeting at the Ministry of Health’s Brickdam Headquarters, emphasizing the importance of shifting strategies to ensure the disease is eradicated.
Dr. Anthony highlighted that, despite past efforts, the country has not seen a significant reduction in malaria cases, prompting the need for a more innovative approach.
He stressed, “If we keep doing the same thing, we get the same results,” urging for the adoption of new strategies.
The Minister also called for a region-specific approach, especially in malaria-endemic areas such as regions 1, 7, 8, and 9. Dr. Anthony recognized the critical role of local partners, including miners and forestry workers, in the fight against malaria.
He proposed training these individuals to detect and treat malaria, further enhancing the country’s response to the disease.
The new strategic plan aims to leverage available tools, expertise, and political will to achieve malaria elimination.
