The government is preparing tougher penalties for everyday offences, including illegal garbage dumping, noise nuisance and obstruction of public roadways.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall says the proposed amendments will include community service as a penalty, as authorities also move to strengthen road safety laws.
“The Attorney General Chambers have completed a wide menu of amendments that are going to speak to noise, nuisance, garbage collection, dumping of debris and placement of garbage and public roadways, etc. Comprehensive, punitive in nature, with community service as a penalty attached to it,” he said.
Speaking on the Starting Point podcast, Nandlall also pointed to measures already introduced to address road safety, including increased speeding fines and automated traffic tickets.
He says the government has also created the offence of motor manslaughter, while selling alcohol to intoxicated persons is a serious offence.
“Accidents on our roadways, for example, is a major issue in the country. We have crafted a new set of amendments which are in force. The speeding ticket, etc. that you now have. Increasing fines. We have done all of that. So we have been balancing it. While we do legislation that are important to the economic development of the country, we also have legislation with social impact and legislation that enhances the legal process of our country,” the AG explained.

Nandlall says the legislative changes form part of efforts to address social problems while ensuring that the country’s laws keep pace with its development.
