During his recent visit to Region One, President Irfaan Ali announced plans for a new housing development in Mabaruma, which will address the housing needs of local residents.

A 17-acre plot of land, located in a central area of the district, has been earmarked for this project.

The development aims to accommodate a significant portion of the 154 housing applications already in the system.

President Ali emphasized that despite challenges related to land scarcity, the Government of Guyana is dedicated to ensuring that all citizens have access to affordable, quality housing.

The new development will provide up to 85 to 90 house lots, with the option for residents to either purchase complete homes or acquire land for self-development.

The government plans to demonstrate the progress of the project within six months, showcasing the transformation of the area.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, confirmed that work on the project will begin in the last quarter of 2024, with the design layout already in place.

The project will contribute to the ongoing growth of Mabaruma and other regions in the area, including Port Kaituma, where additional developments are planned.

Environmental preservation is also a key consideration for this housing project. President Ali assured residents that large trees and fruit-bearing plants will be preserved during the land clearing process.

So far, over 1.5 billion dollars have been invested into housing and housing infrastructure in the region, with this latest project adding to that ongoing commitment.
