The capacity of the Guyana Coastguard has been significantly bolstered with the commissioning of the new vessel, GDFS Shahoud. President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, officiated the ceremony, emphasizing the government’s commitment to strengthening maritime security.

This addition to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) fleet underscores the government’s proactive measures to enhance the nation’s maritime capabilities.
President Ali highlighted the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “We are equipping the Guyana Defence Force with the necessary tools to respond more effectively to any threats in our territorial space, including or exclusive of our economic zone.” He further elaborated on the vessel’s role in bolstering national security, noting that it will enhance the ability to patrol waters, deter security threats, and respond to incidents such as narco and human trafficking, piracy, and illegal fishing.
Chief of Defence Brigadier Omar Khan also spoke on the vessel’s impact, stating, “For the coastguard, therefore, it is the start of a new chapter to generate and extend maritime capabilities to monitor and police our sea space, support search and rescue, aid in distress calls, and protect our resources.” He highlighted that similar acquisitions are unfolding across the force to strengthen its operational readiness.
