New Forest Residents to Receive Electricity This Month

By Delicia Janneire, December 7, 2024

Residents of New Forest in East Canje, Berbice, will soon experience the convenience of electricity for the first time, with the service expected to be provided just before Christmas.

Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh announced this during an outreach session with the community.

The initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to expand electricity access to remote and underserved areas across the country.

The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), has worked to make this possible in time for the holiday season, following instructions from President Irfaan Ali.

Minister Singh acknowledged that while the project faced delays—originally slated for completion in July—the team overcame several unforeseen challenges, including issues related to the electrical lines.

He expressed his satisfaction in fulfilling the President’s directive and bringing electricity to the residents of New Forest.

The project will connect approximately 30 households to the national grid.

Minister Singh also emphasized the importance of responsible electricity usage and encouraged residents to work with GPL to complete their home connections.

He urged them to ensure their wiring is done safely and properly.

In addition, the Minister reminded residents to use electricity wisely, stating that while they can now enjoy the benefits of lighting, they should conserve energy.

He reassured them that their Christmas lights would not be compromised.

This development follows the recent electrification of Carbwood Creek, another previously unserved area in Berbice.

Since 2020, the government has provided electricity solutions—ranging from solar panels to battery storage—to over 30,000 households in remote and hinterland communities across Guyana.
