The University of Guyana has officially inaugurated its new Students Society Executive Council for the 2024/2025 academic year, with Tirishatha Semple elected as President.

In a formal ceremony held at the Education Lecture Theatre on the Turkeyen Campus, Semple took the oath of office alongside other elected members, representing over eleven thousand students at the university.

Dr. Nigel Gravesande, the Registrar of the University, addressed the new council, encouraging them to establish attainable goals while overcoming the fear of failure in their pursuits.

He emphasized the importance of setting realistic objectives that foster individual and collective confidence.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin, also spoke at the event, thanking the outgoing executive council for their contributions and pledging support for the new body. She urged Semple to embody leadership for all students.

In her remarks, Semple outlined her vision for the council, focusing on ensuring students have access to quality education and necessary support.

She called on her team to remain committed to their mission, aiming to leave a legacy that future generations can take pride in.

Tirishatha Semple, who succeeds Shaquan Gill, becomes the third woman to hold the presidency in the university’s history.

The election for the president and three representatives from each faculty took place on September 25.
