Hundreds of residents and farmers in Regions 5 and 6 are set to benefit from improved drainage and irrigation as the Ministry of Agriculture recently handed over five excavators to the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA).
This equipment, worth millions, will enhance productivity and reduce flood risks in these agricultural communities.
Two mini-excavators, valued at approximately 27 million Guyanese dollars, were handed over to Region 5 to aid in community drainage.
Operators Venita Chatergoon and Divya Ragbir expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to support local agriculture.
Chatergoon noted that the work will make farm access easier, while Ragbir shared excitement about becoming a heavy-duty operator.
Additionally, three more excavators, including a long-boom excavator, were deployed to Region 6 for use in cultivation and residential areas under the Flood Risk Management Project.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized that MMA/ADA would collaborate with local authorities to implement a comprehensive work schedule, with an aim to operate the machinery seven days a week.
These initiatives will address flood-prone areas by improving drainage, benefiting the agricultural sector and communities alike.
