The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) and Schlumberger Guyana have officially launched a new animal rehabilitation enclosure at the Botanical Garden and Zoological Park, designed to support vulnerable species such as the Red-footed and Yellow-footed Tortoises, as well as the Jabiru Stork, the zoo’s oldest inhabitant.

PAC Commissioner Jason Fraser highlighted that this initiative responds to public concerns regarding the zoo’s condition.

The project aims to enhance the facility, which is the only zoo in the country, with a focus on rehabilitation and conservation efforts.

The collaboration with Schlumberger began in 2023, starting with beautification efforts in the park.

The Vice President of Schlumberger, Sharlene Seegoolam, stated that the company is committed to environmental preservation for present and future generations.

She emphasized that the project’s success stems from a shared vision between the PAC and their team of volunteers, whose efforts have been crucial in bringing this initiative to fruition.

This rehabilitation project is part of a broader transformation aimed at establishing the zoo as a research and conservation center, enhancing its role in wildlife protection and education.
