The Ministry of Education has commissioned a new AutoCAD laboratory at the New Amsterdam Secondary School.
The facility is designed to enhance the students’ technical skills and provides a modern space for digital design, innovation and practical learning.
The commissioning forms part of the Ministry’s continued expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in schools, preparing students for roles within Guyana’s rapid transformation.
Deputy Chief Education Officer – Technical Dr. Ritesh Tularam says TVET must move beyond traditional perception, highlighting that technical and vocational education is a pathway to innovation, skills development and meaningful career opportunities.
“We’re moving to a modern TVET. It’s all about innovation, It’s about inclusion of technologies, it’s about creating entrepreneurship opportunities. It’s about ensuring we’re engaging our students in meaningful production and ultimately transform it into lifelong learning,” he said.
Principal of New Amsterdam Secondary, Wahid Omar welcomed the initiative, noting that the new facility will help to equip students with the necessary skill to contribute to national development.
“From the classroom to the community, from the drawing board to the digital screen, from ideas to innovation, from education to nation building. This is the promise of this laboratory. That is the promise of the New Amsterdam Secondary School and that is the promise of the young people of Guyana,” Omar said.
Equipped with 15 computers, students are being introduced to computer-aided design skills that can support careers in engineering, architecture, construction, manufacturing and other technology-driven industries.
