New $261 Million Pump Station Commissioned in Region Two

Farmers in Cozier, Lower Pomeroon, Region Two, are set to benefit significantly from the newly commissioned $261 million pump station, enhancing irrigation and drainage across approximately 5,000 acres of cash crops.

The project involved the rehabilitation of the existing structure and the installation of an additional pump, providing essential support for agricultural activities in the area.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced that the government plans to construct two more pump stations in the region.

One of these is located at Plantation Andrews and is expected to be commissioned in the coming weeks, while the second station will be situated at Charity, Essequibo.

The Minister emphasized the importance of such investments in boosting agricultural production, noting that increased yields result from dedicated governmental support.

He also highlighted plans for agro-processing facilities and hydroponic systems aimed at further enhancing agricultural productivity and food security in the region.

These initiatives are part of the regional objective to reduce the food import bill by 25 percent by the year 2025, aligning with the government’s commitment to transforming Guyana’s agricultural sector from a primary producer to one that adds value through processing.
