More than 100 households in Waramuri and Para, Region One, are now receiving clean and safe water following the launch of a $23 million water supply system.

The commissioning ceremony took place earlier this week in the Moruca sub-district.

During the ceremony, it was revealed that the project faced challenges, with four unsuccessful drilling attempts before a successful well was achieved.

The government eventually decided to drill a well at Para, installing a pump and distribution system to ensure access to water.

Collin Croal, the Minister of Housing and Water, emphasized that the government’s goal is to ensure universal access to clean water.

He noted that six wells have been completed in the Moruca sub-region this year, with plans to complete an additional 12 wells by year-end.

Minister Croal highlighted that Region One currently has about 83% water coverage, with a target of reaching close to 90% by the end of 2024.

Residents expressed their gratitude for the new system. Lenita Henry from Waramuri noted that previously, the community relied on drying ponds, and the new well has been a significant improvement. Kaster Fredericks, another resident, thanked the government for the water system, appreciating the enhanced water supply.

Looking ahead, Region One will benefit from the drilling of 25 new wells and upgrades to water distribution systems in 2024, with an investment of $700 million.
