The Central Immigration and Passport Office today launched the new 10-Year Co-operative Republic of Guyana Passport, an electronic passport equipped with enhanced security features. Applicants can now choose between a five-year or ten-year validity period.

The initiative, spearheaded by President Irfaan Ali, allows Guyanese to obtain passports embedded with an electronic chip.

This requires biometric enrollment, including fingerprinting, to further enhance document security.

Deputy Chief Immigration Officer Superintendent Stephen Telford emphasized the significance of the upgrade, noting that the new passport aligns with international standards and extends the validity period while maintaining the same number of pages.

The application process has transitioned entirely online, enabling applicants to schedule appointments for biodata collection and passport issuance.

The cost for the new 10-year e-passport is GYD $12,000.

Individuals who applied on or before February 7, 2025, will receive the previous version, while applications submitted from February 10 onwards will be issued the new e-passport.

The electronic passport is designed to work in tandem with the new electronic embarkation and disembarkation gates at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, with a future rollout planned for Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle.

The Central Immigration and Passport Office urges citizens to stay informed and exercise patience during this transition.
