In commemoration of World Radio Day, NCN Radio reflects on the profound influence of radio in remote areas, where its impact transcends mere entertainment.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Radio Broadcaster, Michella Abraham-Ali, underscores the pivotal role of radio stations in providing a platform for the voices of people in these regions.
Over recent years, NCN has prioritized expanding its reach to remote parts of Guyana, establishing seven radio stations in the hinterland and four on the coastland.
Abraham-Ali emphasizes that radio has evolved beyond simply broadcasting music and news, becoming a vital tool for uplifting communities and preserving cultural heritage.
Abraham-Ali highlights NCN’s efforts to lift the identity of indigenous communities by providing a platform for sharing stories, celebrating culture, and speaking indigenous languages.
NCN Radio has played a significant role in preserving linguistic diversity and strengthening cultural identities, particularly through stations like Radio Aishalton and Radio Orealla, where a substantial portion of programming is conducted in indigenous languages such as Arawak and Waspishian.
The broadcaster emphasizes the importance of indigenous language and education as major achievements of regional radio stations.
Looking ahead, NCN aims to further expand its reach, with plans underway to construct more powerful frequencies to extend its coverage.
World Radio Day, celebrated under the theme “Radio: A Century informing, entertaining, and educating,” underscores the enduring significance of radio in informing, entertaining, and empowering communities worldwide.
