National Science Fair 2023 Showcases Projects Aimed at Food Security and Beyond

The Region Four leg of the National Science Fair 2023 saw active participation from both public and private schools, with projects targeting critical sectors like food security and land surveying, among others.

One of the notable projects at the science fair was presented by Hope Secondary School, which focused on aquaponics to address food security concerns.

The project highlighted the benefits of combining fish rearing and crop cultivation, resulting in reduced costs of inputs and labour.

The symbiotic relationship between fish and bacteria with the plants showcased how this innovative approach could contribute to food security in Guyana by providing affordable, labour-saving, and organic means of producing healthier food more efficiently.

Anacla Adams, the project representative, expressed the advantages of this eco-friendly system.

Another fascinating entry at the science fair came from the University of Guyana Robotics Club, which showcased a quadruped robot designed for land surveying and fire rescue purposes.

The robot is equipped with sensors to collect crucial data during fire rescues and can withstand environmental hazards for prolonged periods, depending on its material composition.

Waynetta Naughton, the project representative, emphasized how this robot could potentially save lives by surveying and identifying critical areas during emergencies.

Marian Academy also participated in the science fair, focusing on renewable sources of energy involving water, hydrogen, and cobalt.

They aimed to switch to hydrogen production using water-splitting technology, which is eco-friendly but energy-consuming.

To address this challenge, the team introduced a cobalt-based catalyst to expedite the reaction and enhance the efficiency of the process.

Ajala Majrah, the project representative, emphasized the significance of renewable resources, especially with the adverse impacts of fossil fuels on the environment.

The science fair will continue in different regions, with each event featuring regional winners.

The culmination of the National Science Fair will showcase the brightest young minds from across the country, emphasizing innovation and solutions to critical challenges in various sectors.
