National Road Safety Month launched

-by Jordan Alkins

National Road Safety Month has been officially launched under the theme “Every Life Matters. Every Road User Has a Responsibility”.

As Guyana observes Road Safety Month, Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond is reminding all road users that safety on the roadways is a shared responsibility.

She says road safety cannot be a focus for just one month, but a commitment made every day by drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and passengers alike.

“I urge every Guyanese to slow down, exercise patience, obey the traffic laws, and respect other road users. A few seconds of care can prevent a lifetime of loss,” she said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Phillips says road safety is more than obeying traffic laws. It is about protecting lives and ensuring that everyone returns home safely.

He says safer roads require cooperation among ministries, enforcement agencies, the private sector, civil society and every citizen.

He further noted that the government is strengthening traffic law enforcement, expanding road safety education, and improving street lighting, road markings and traffic signage.

“However, these interventions must be complemented by responsible behaviour of all road users. I therefore urge everyone to observe the Guyana Police Force’s five principles of responsible road use: care, caution, consideration, common sense, and courtesy. These principles must guide us, whether we are driving, riding, or walking,” he said.
The Prime Minister is calling on all Guyanese to take personal and collective responsibility by respecting speed limits and avoiding reckless and distracted driving.

He says the choices made today can prevent tragedies tomorrow.
