November marks the observance of National Road Safety Awareness Month in Guyana, with a renewed focus on reducing accidents and road fatalities.

The month-long initiative was launched this morning with a prayer ceremony hosted by the Police Traffic Department and the Guyana National Road Safety Council.

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn emphasized the need for continued efforts to improve road safety.

He outlined the country’s commitment to achieving the United Nations’ road safety target of reducing road deaths by 50% by 2030.

Minister Benn acknowledged progress but stressed the need for greater responsibility and awareness to meet this milestone.

Traffic Chief Senior Superintendent Mahendra Singh reported encouraging reductions in road accidents and fatalities compared to last year.

While 2023 saw 123 fatal accidents resulting in 144 deaths, 2024 has recorded 32 fewer fatal accidents and 44 fewer deaths so far.

Singh called on regional traffic heads to enforce the law fairly and diligently.

He expressed confidence that consistent commitment could reduce annual fatalities to below 100 long before 2030.

This year’s Road Safety Month is being observed under the theme, “Do the Right Thing,” underscoring the importance of responsible behavior on the road.

Government officials, law enforcement, and civil society remain united in their efforts to foster a culture of safety and accountability on Guyana’s roadways.
