National Mental Health Action Plan and Suicide Prevention Plan Launched

By Delicia Janniere

Emphasizing mental health services in schools and combatting the stigma associated with mental health conditions, the National Mental Health Action Plan and National Suicide Prevention Plan were launched on Tuesday.

The government has intensified efforts to address mental health issues and suicide prevention, particularly within the school system.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the implementation of the ‘green bench initiative’ in 25 schools as part of the Mental Health Action Plan.

Under this initiative, students facing mental health challenges can sit on designated benches, where trained teachers can engage with them and provide support.

“We don’t want to have specialized health centers; what we want is our primary care physicians to be able to provide basic treatment for mental health conditions,” stated Minister Anthony, emphasizing the importance of integrating mental health services into primary care.

Addressing the stigma associated with mental health, Minister Anthony emphasized the need for education and awareness campaigns to promote understanding and acceptance.

He underscored the message that individuals receiving treatment for mental health conditions can lead fulfilling lives.

Training initiatives have already commenced to equip educators and healthcare professionals with the skills necessary to address mental health issues effectively.

In severe cases, referrals to psychiatrists will be made to ensure comprehensive care for individuals in need.

As Guyana prioritizes mental health and suicide prevention, the launch of these action plans signifies a significant step forward in fostering a supportive environment and providing accessible mental health services for all.
