National Library Celebrates World Poetry Day

By Samuel Gillis

The National Library resonated with the harmonious blend of song, dance, and verse as it commemorated World Poetry Day.

Songs filled the air this morning at the National Library, where individuals showcased Guyanese talents in various art forms, including song, dance, and poetry, in observance of World Poetry Day.

Chief Librarian Emily King expressed the purpose of the event, emphasizing the importance of keeping poetry alive while paying tribute to local poets, both present and past, and involving the youth in the celebration.

The event featured an open mic session, inviting young people to share their modern poetry and spoken word performances, fostering an intergenerational exchange of creativity.

“For the older ones, we looked at them re-exploring the joy of poetry, and for the younger ones, to open new pathways with a particular focus on our Guyanese poetry,” remarked Ms. Emily King, highlighting the event’s dual objectives of rediscovering poetry’s allure and nurturing emerging talent.

Encouraging young Guyanese to engage with poetry, Ms. King emphasized its role as a medium for expressing emotions, thoughts on social issues, and celebrating successes.

Despite challenges, she noted an enduring interest in poetry among youths and advocated for its integration into school curricula and the organization of more literary events to raise awareness.

Furthermore, Ms. King underscored the importance of cultivating a love for reading among Guyana’s youth, emphasizing that knowledge is power.

The celebration of World Poetry Day at the National Library served as a vibrant platform for cultural expression, fostering a deeper appreciation for literature and encouraging the exploration of poetry’s transformative potential.
