The ongoing National Elite League is being recognized as a key development for basketball in Guyana, according to Michael Singh, President of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF).

Singh sees the league as an important precursor to the highly anticipated One Guyana Basketball League, which is set to launch next year.

The National Elite League has provided an opportunity for teams from across Guyana to interact and develop their skills.

Singh highlighted how the league has allowed teams with different playing styles, such as those from Linden, Georgetown, Bartica, and Berbice, to face off against each other.

This exposure to various approaches to the game has contributed to the overall development of players.

Singh also emphasized the importance of youth development initiatives to cultivate the next generation of talented basketball players, both locally and internationally.

The GBF president pointed out that creating more opportunities for young players is crucial to advancing the sport in the country.

In addition to player development, Singh touched on the need for improved basketball infrastructure.

He mentioned that plans are in motion to build a facility dedicated solely to basketball, a move aimed at enhancing training and competition venues for the sport.

This facility will not compete with other sports, marking a significant investment in basketball’s future in Guyana.

The National Elite League continues to generate excitement as the competition heads into the next round, with a doubleheader scheduled for this Wednesday at the National Gymnasium.

The league’s success and the upcoming One Guyana Basketball League are seen as stepping stones toward elevating the sport in Guyana and providing a platform for local talent to shine on a larger stage.
