NAREI and USAID Sign MOU to Boost Caribbean Agricultural Productivity

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to advance the Caribbean Agricultural Productivity Improvement Activity (CAPA).

The agreement marks a significant step forward in the collaborative effort to enhance agricultural productivity and market efficiencies across the Caribbean, including Guyana.

The project, funded by USAID, is aimed at improving farming practices and market access within the fruit and vegetable sector.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha emphasized the importance of the initiative in achieving the goal of reducing the food import bill by 25%.

He highlighted that capacity building and partnerships are crucial for surpassing this target.

The $5.3 million project will support farmers by promoting market-driven agricultural techniques and providing access to both domestic and regional markets.

The CAPA project will employ an integrated value chain approach, focusing on value addition, practical storage solutions, and the implementation of climate-smart practices and technologies, such as shade shelters, to enhance yields and preserve shelf life.

USAID Regional Representative Durwin Humphery underscored the objectives of the partnership, noting that the collaboration will foster improved agricultural practices and support the region’s overall productivity.
