The MV Sabanto and MV Kanawan ferries, which provide essential transport services across the Essequibo River between Parika and Supenaam, are scheduled for periodic dry docking to facilitate maintenance works.

This announcement was made by Public Works Minister Juan Edghill, who emphasized the importance of maintaining these vessels due to the increased demand for water transport in the Supernaam region.

Minister Edghill stated that the government is committed to ensuring that all vessels operated by the Transport and Harbours Department receive the necessary maintenance.

The ferries have been working overtime to meet the heightened transportation needs of residents in the area.

The docking will be conducted on a rotational basis, allowing one vessel to be serviced while the other remains in operation, supported by additional vessels as needed.

This approach aims to minimize disruptions to the livelihoods of those relying on these ferries for transport.

Minister Edghill noted that maintenance work often occurs while the vessels are in service, highlighting the urgent demand for transport in the region.

The government allocated $8.1 billion in the 2024 budget to improve river transport, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure.
