MV MA Lisha: A Milestone in Guyana’s Transportation System

In January 2021, the Government of Guyana signed a contract with Gordon Reach Ship Builders and Engineer Ltd, Kolkata, India, to construct the MV MA Lisha.

After almost two years, the vessel’s design and construction were completed at a cost of US$12.7 million.

This marked a significant step forward in supporting the economic growth of Region 1 and meeting the increasing demand for ferry services.

The MV MA Lisha journeyed over 11,500 nautical miles from Kolkata, arriving in Guyana on April 6, 2023.

This 230-ft-long vessel has the capacity to accommodate 294 seated passengers, including 14 crew members, 18 small vehicles or 14 sedans, 10×10 containers, and 2 trucks, with a total cargo capacity of 250 tons.

The MV MA Lisha is estimated to consume substantially less fuel than its predecessor, the MV Kimbia and it is expected to enhance efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness while providing a higher level of service to the people of Region One.

Captain Cleroy Haywood, who operates the vessel, assures passengers of safety and comfort during their journeys. The MV MA Lisha is a vital addition to Guyana’s transportation system, crucial for the country’s growth and development.

The vessel’s arrival is a testament to Guyana’s transition into the food capital of the region. Improved transportation is a key factor in unlocking the country’s food potential. The efficient transport of goods and people is pivotal to the success of Guyana’s economy, and the MV MA Lisha plays a vital role in enhancing connectivity between regions.

The MV MA Lisha not only signifies Guyana’s economic growth but also symbolizes the strength of the bond between Guyana and India. It is a testament to the spirit of friendship and collaboration between the two nations.

As Guyana continues to progress towards becoming a regional food hub, the MV MA Lisha stands as a symbol of progress, connecting communities, fostering economic growth, and building a stronger future for the nation.
