Musical Tribute Held for Late Icon Dave Martins at Arthur Chung Convention Centre

The tribute, titled “Dave Martins is We Own: A Musical and Visual Journey,” was organized by the Government of Guyana and paid homage to the iconic songwriter, musician, and playwright.

The event featured live performances of Martins’ timeless songs by members of the Trade Winds band, local artists, and family members, providing the audience with a powerful musical journey through his work.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Waldron, shared a reflection prepared by President Irfaan Ali, celebrating Martins not only as a musician but also as a cultural icon whose contributions have transcended generations.

The reflection emphasized how Martins’ songs captured the essence of Caribbean identity, bridging the gap between the past and the present, and resonating deeply with people of all ages.

Waldron acknowledged Martins’ lasting impact, noting that his legacy would continue long after his passing.

Also taking part in the tribute was Martins’ wife, Annette Arjoon-Martins, who shared her thoughts on the profound connection Guyanese people have with Martins’ music.

She noted that his songs, particularly “Not a Blade of Grass,” had the power to stir national pride and unity, with every Guyanese having their own personal stories of how his music resonated deeply with them.
