Murder Suspect Shaquawn Alleyne Remanded as Family Seeks Swift Justice

Shaquawn Alleyne, known as ‘Izwe,’ has been remanded for the murder of Shonnette Dover in 2021.

Alleyne appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune via Zoom, facing charges related to the alleged killing that occurred between April 3 and April 30, 2021, at Canvas City, Wismar, Linden.

The 24-year-old, unrepresented in court, did not enter a plea to the indictable charge.

Prosecutors, led by Assistant Superintendent Vernette Pindar-Whittaker, informed the court that a secondary investigation into the illegal firearm used in the crime is underway based on the accused’s interview.

One suspect is in custody, and the police are pursuing another connected to the alleged buying and selling of the illegal weapon.

Details emerged during the court session that Alleyne had previous charges for narcotics possession (dismissed) and inflicting grievous bodily harm (settled outside of court).

The prosecution sought continuance, indicating that the case file awaits the ballistics report. Alleyne has been remanded until February 27, 2024.

Geraldine Jones, Shonnette Dover’s paternal grandmother, present in court, expressed sadness and called for swift justice, emphasizing the need for a fair case.

In April 2021, Alleyne reported Dover missing, triggering a 28-day search in Linden.

The search concluded with a confession from the victim’s teenage sister, leading to the discovery of Dover’s decomposed body.

Alleyne evaded the law until January 18, 2024, when he was captured by Surinamese Police.
