Moruca Region One Now Connected with New ICT Hub and Free High-Speed Internet

Moruca Region One has recently marked a significant advancement in digital connectivity with the inauguration of a new ICT Hub in Kamwatta and the launch of Star Link Free Public high-speed internet.

This development, spearheaded by Prime Minister Brig. Mark Phillips, reflects a major step forward in enhancing digital access for residents in Guyana’s remote regions.

The newly established ICT Hub, which officially opened on July 16, will provide residents with three access points for free high-speed Wi-Fi.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to bridge the digital divide and improve internet access in the hinterland areas of Guyana.

Prime Minister Phillips underscored the importance of this project, emphasizing its role in facilitating communication and access to information for the local community.

His commitment to ICT development in the hinterland regions is evident in this recent milestone.

Christopher Dean, General Manager of the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), called on residents to take ownership of the new service and practice good internet and cyber hygiene.

His remarks highlight the importance of responsible usage in maximizing the benefits of the new technology.

The Office of the Prime Minister has invested 1.3 billion dollars into ICT development, with the goal of establishing 200 ICT Hubs across Guyana by the end of the year.

To date, 138 hubs have been completed. As part of Phase One of the ICT rollout, 53 communities in the hinterland are targeted for connectivity, with 33 already achieved.

Vice-Chairman for Barima Waini, Annansha Peters, expressed the community’s excitement, describing the high-speed internet access as a “dream come true.”

This sentiment reflects the positive impact that improved connectivity is expected to have on the region.

Future plans include community training sessions to help residents effectively manage and utilize the ICT hubs, ensuring that the benefits of this technology are sustained and maximized.
