More than 11,000 small contractors have applied for prequalification to undertake government projects, signaling growing interest in public sector opportunities.

This was revealed by President Dr. Irfaan Ali while speaking at a ceremony for the handover of garbage trucks to NDCs.

President Ali said the government is developing a “care economy” that creates opportunities for every citizen to succeed.

He explained that, as these opportunities expand, small contractors are increasingly benefiting by applying for projects valued between $5 -$15 million.

That didn’t happen by accident that happen because of the openness of the system and because people know there’s a chance in the system,” he said.

He emphasised that in the coming days and months, the government will roll out a comprehensive plan to identify and upgrade critical infrastructure in communities nationwide.

Your playfield, drainage, burial ground, clinics, health centres, schools, admin building , public spaces recreational parks so that you will have a long term maintenance program so that these places can be kept in a good way,” he added.

At the same time the head of state stressed the importance of civic responsibility, urging citizens to adopt better practices, including proper waste disposal, as government continues to invest in infrastructure.
