As Guyana continues to build out its energy infrastructure, there is a need for more Guyanese to step up and be trained in green energy related disciplines, so that the country can advance its green energy transition.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips, whose portfolios include energy, shared with the conference, the efforts being made to train Guyanese in green energy so that a new workforce can be built.

Our government has been advancing initiatives for the University of Guyana and through GOAL platform, to develop the skilled labour force needed. From engineers and technicians, to environmental scientists and policy experts. We must equip our citizens with the skills needed to lead this transformation,” he said.

As the training of the workforce continues, however, so does the energy transition, with over 186 megawatts of new generating capacity introduced since 2020.

We also constructed solar farms at Onderneeming, Charity, Leguaan, Wakenaam, Trafalgar, Prospect, Hampshire, Bartica, Mahdia and Lethem. We’ve completed Mini-hydro power plants at Moca Moca, Kumu and Kato. We’ve installed 46 solar mini grids,” PM Phillips added.

In addition, private company BOSAI is constructing a 10-MegaWatt solar farm while another 45-MegaWatt farm will be completed at Aurora Gold Mines by March 2026.

AGM Incorporated, owned by Chinese company Zijin Mining, is the operator there.
