MMA/ADA Prepares for Rainy Season by Strengthening Flood Defenses

The Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA) is gearing up for the anticipated rainy season in the New Year.

The authority is proactively taking measures to reinforce the Flood Embankment along the Abary River and clear channels, ensuring preparedness for potential heavy rainfall.

Utilizing the dry season to their advantage, MMA/ADA aims to fortify the embankment to minimize the impact of rainy weather and maintain water accessibility during the current dry spell.

This strategic approach aligns with the forecasted conclusion of El Nino conditions in the first quarter of 2024.

The importance of this preparation is underscored by the severe consequences faced by farmers in 2021 and 2022 due to overtopping of the embankment.

Navendra Raghu, MMA’s Manager of the Engineering Department, provides insights into the ongoing efforts.

Raghu explains that the rehabilitation works include addressing the link canal, especially given the reduction in water levels in the conservancy.

This comprehensive approach aims to prevent flooding issues that have affected farmers in the past.

Moreover, the MMA/ADA is installing new pumps in various areas, expediting water access for farmers to maintain productivity levels.

These initiatives reflect the authority’s commitment to proactive measures that safeguard agricultural interests against potential weather-related challenges.
