The Ministry of Public Works is in the process of formulating a new policy aimed at regulating the use of roadways by truck operators.
Minister Juan Edghill stated that the initiative seeks to prevent accidents and reduce inconveniences faced by other road users.
As part of this effort, the ministry has been engaging with truck drivers to promote safe driving practices.
Minister Edghill emphasized the necessity for a cultural shift toward safety, particularly among truck operators, as the nation continues to develop.
Key components of the upcoming policy will address several critical issues, including speed limits for trucks, designated parking areas for articulated vehicles and container haulers, and restrictions on the number of hours drivers spend on the road.
The minister noted that the continued overloading of trucks contributes to road deterioration, while improper parking poses additional safety risks on highways.
To mitigate these issues, the government has initiated plans to establish a dedicated parking area for truck operators, encompassing approximately 20 acres.
This space will be available for rent to those operating articulated and commercial vehicles, ensuring that trucks do not park on road shoulders, which currently endangers other commuters.
Minister Edghill reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety among truck drivers, which is expected to lead to a decrease in road accidents.
This initiative represents a proactive approach to improving road safety and addressing the challenges posed by truck operators on Guyana’s roadways.
