The Ministry of Public Works is exploring the acquisition of heavy-duty machinery to boost road construction efforts in hinterland villages.
This initiative aims to address the growing demand for improved infrastructure in these remote areas.
During a recent assessment of road construction challenges in the hinterland, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, identified that manual labor is increasingly insufficient for the demands of modern roadwork.
To address this issue, the Ministry is considering investing in essential equipment, such as excavators and graders, which are crucial for efficient road excavation, loading, and grading.
Discussions regarding this proposal have advanced to the Cabinet level, indicating significant progress in the planning stages.
The proposed machinery is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of road construction projects and support community engagement in infrastructure development.
Minister Edghill also noted the need for comprehensive training programs to ensure that the equipment is used effectively and maintained properly.
This includes equipping and training operators and providing ongoing support to ensure the machinery’s optimal use.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who also met with local leaders, emphasized the importance of utilizing community resources for these construction projects, underscoring the role of local capacity in the development process.
The Ministry’s plan to acquire heavy-duty equipment reflects its commitment to improving road infrastructure in hinterland areas, which is crucial for connecting remote communities and supporting their development.
