Ministry of Labour Reports Zero Cases of Child Labour in 2024

The Ministry of Labour has announced that no cases of child labour were reported in Guyana throughout 2024.

This milestone is attributed to a series of proactive measures implemented by the Ministry, including an increase in inspections and awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about the negative impact of child labour on children’s development.

In total, the Ministry conducted over 3,000 inspections at industrial establishments across the country in 2024, surpassing their target by 15%.

These efforts reached an estimated 20,000 people in all regions of Guyana, including both employers and workers.

Along with inspections, the Ministry also carried out 41 sensitization visits to primary and secondary schools in multiple regions.

These visits focused on raising awareness among students about the dangers and consequences of child labour.

To further their educational efforts, the Ministry organized awareness walks in Regions 1 and 4, which were attended by more than 1,000 participants, including students.

Additionally, 20 outreach activities were held throughout the year to educate the public, employers, and employees about their rights and responsibilities under the labour laws.

The Ministry’s comprehensive approach has resulted in no reported incidents of child labour for the year, marking a significant success in the fight against this issue in Guyana.
