The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is set to establish the first forensic interview unit in Guyana, a significant step in enhancing the protection of vulnerable children in the country.

The announcement was made by Minister Dr. Vindhya Persaud during a recent press conference.

The state-owned forensic interview unit will provide a dedicated and safe space for investigating cases of child abuse, where victims can share their experiences in a secure environment.

Minister Persaud emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to addressing major social issues such as domestic violence, child abuse, and other societal concerns.

“One of the major initiatives we are working on this year through the Inter-American Development Bank project is setting up our own forensic interview unit.

We’ve already sent a few officers for preliminary training in India, and we’re equipping the Region 3 Hope and Justice Centre with the necessary equipment,” Minister Persaud stated.

Currently, forensic interviews for sexual abuse cases are conducted in collaboration with Child Advocacy Centres, Childlink, and Blossom Inc.

In addition, the Ministry is working on introducing new legislation called the “Protection of Children International Measures,” aligning with the Hague Convention to further safeguard children’s rights.

Minister Persaud added that if all goes according to plan, the new legislation will be presented to the National Assembly soon.

This initiative follows the recent enactment of the Hague Convention legislation, which focuses on inter-country adoption.
