Ministry of Housing and Water Targets 90% Treated Water Coverage by 2025

The Ministry of Housing and Water is on track to achieve 90% treated water coverage for coastal residents by the end of 2025, marking significant progress in improving the country’s water infrastructure.

This ambitious goal comes as part of a broader strategy aimed at increasing access to clean water for Guyanese citizens.

In 2020, only 52% of the population had access to treated water, but this has significantly improved over the past few years.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues, announced that efforts to expand coverage are progressing well, and the strategic plan set in place is designed to increase treated water access from 52% to 92% by 2025.

Key components of the Coastal Water Treatment Program include the construction of seven large water treatment plants, the establishment of 15 smaller plants, and the upgrading of 12 existing treatment plants nationwide.

These initiatives are part of a long-term plan to meet both current and future demands, as the population continues to grow.

In November 2024, the Ministry was allocated supplementary provisions of $1.9 billion to support the projects aimed at enhancing water treatment facilities along the coast.

These efforts are expected to play a crucial role in meeting the 90% treated water coverage goal by 2025.
