The Ministry of Health is working to update its national Mental Health Strategy to ensure that all citizens, regardless of location, have access to essential mental health services and resources.

Dr. Mark Constantine, the Head of Psychology Services at the Ministry, shared these developments during a recent episode of the Health Matters program.

Dr. Constantine explained that the updated plan, which will cover the period from 2023 to 2030, is designed to be comprehensive and inclusive, catering to the needs of all regions across the country.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s commitment to improving mental health care in Guyana.

He also addressed the stigma surrounding mental health, which often prevents individuals from seeking help.

Dr. Constantine emphasized that stigma arises from myths, misperceptions, and misinformation, and urged the public not to let these barriers prevent them from accessing professional support.

He highlighted that stress is often misunderstood as just a feeling, when in fact it can have profound impacts on one’s well-being.

The observance of Mental Health Day on October 10 each year is an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health challenges.

This year’s theme, “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” stresses the importance of mental well-being in professional environments.
