The Ministry of Health has reported a significant rise in prostate cancer cases, with the disease now being recognized as the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Guyana.
The Ministry is stepping up its efforts to raise awareness and reduce the number of prostate cancer-related deaths in the country.
Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate gland, which is part of the male reproductive system, begin to grow uncontrollably.
Early detection through screening is essential to improving outcomes, particularly for asymptomatic individuals.
In response to this growing health issue, the Ministry of Health is preparing to launch a new document titled The Prostate Health Management at an upcoming international medical conference on November 8th.
The document outlines strategies aimed at tackling prostate health concerns in Guyana.
One of the key messages in the document is the importance of early screening, which can help identify prostate cancer before symptoms develop, offering better chances for successful treatment.
Dr. Sawan Jagnarain, Coordinator of the Men’s Health Unit at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of raising public awareness and encouraging men to undergo regular screenings.
He highlighted that these efforts are part of a broader initiative to improve public health and ensure that more men take an active role in managing their prostate health.
The launch of the awareness campaign and the document is a significant step in addressing the growing concern over prostate cancer in Guyana.
The Ministry of Health continues to advocate for preventive measures and early detection to save lives.
