The Ministry of Health has initiated the Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Campaign in Regions Three and Four, focusing efforts on eradicating this debilitating disease.

Sponsored by Essential Care Pharmacy and GTM Insurance, the campaign aims to safeguard citizens against lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis or big foot.

Lymphatic filariasis is caused by an infection with thread-like parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites.

The disease can lead to severe swelling in the legs and other body parts.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, emphasizes the importance of public participation in the campaign, highlighting that many individuals infected with the disease may not show symptoms for years, during which significant damage can occur to the lymphatic system.

Dr. Anthony noted that the campaign is concentrated in Regions Three and Four, as other regions have successfully eliminated the disease.

He expressed optimism about eradicating other infectious diseases, such as Hepatitis C.

With support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), substantial progress has been made in the fight against Hepatitis C.

Dr. Anthony reported that 42 individuals have been cured since the program’s inception a year ago, and efforts are ongoing to identify and treat more Hepatitis C positive patients.
