Caribbean Wellness day community relay and walk.

In observance of Caribbean Wellness Day 2023, the Ministry of Health organized a Community Relay and Walk, carrying the theme: ‘Power through Collective Action – The Care We Need: At work, at school, at home.’

This health-conscious event drew participation from numerous individuals, commencing at the Caricom Secretariat and culminating at the Ministry of Health in Georgetown.

Malcolm Watkins, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, delivered a reassuring message to participants, affirming the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting and supporting the health and well-being of all Guyanese. He highlighted the need to address preventable risk factors associated with immobility, mortality, and disability in the country, emphasizing issues such as high plasma glucose, body mass index, blood pressure, and dietary habits as top contributors to Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

Advisor on health systems and services of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Daniel Albrecht, commended the initiative, noting that it empowers communities and encourages collective action to enhance health and well-being. He underlined the importance of both expanding health services and fostering community-driven efforts to improve overall health.

Caribbean Wellness Day, celebrated on the second Saturday in September by CARICOM countries, is part of a coordinated effort to combat Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and promote health. The event was made possible through collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Power Collective Action, Men on Mission, CARICOM, and various other organizations.
