Ministry of Health Announces Initiative to Reduce Prosthesis Costs and Provide Free Services

By Saskia Warrick

During the launch of Rehabilitation Week 2024, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony unveiled plans to alleviate financial burdens for amputees in Guyana by reducing the cost of prosthetic limbs.

The ultimate goal, he announced, is to make these essential medical devices accessible free of charge to all patients in need.

Currently, amputees in Guyana are required to pay fees to the Health Ministry to obtain prosthetic limbs, posing significant challenges for those unable to afford the procedure.

Acknowledging these difficulties, Dr. Anthony emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to lowering these costs immediately and transitioning towards providing prostheses at no cost in the near future.

The initiative has been warmly received by beneficiaries like Ayeni Olutunde, who highlighted the transformative impact of receiving a prosthetic limb through the Ptolemy Reid Rehabilitation Center.

Olutunde expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s efforts and stressed how free access to prostheses would greatly benefit others facing similar challenges.

Rehabilitation Week 2024 is being observed under the theme “Transformative Triumphs: Celebrating the transformative triumphs and successes that individuals achieve through their rehabilitation journey.”

The week features various activities including early identification sessions at health centers and charitable initiatives aimed at supporting rehabilitation efforts across the country.

The Ministry of Health’s proactive measures underscore its dedication to enhancing healthcare accessibility and improving quality of life for all Guyanese citizens.
