In a significant boost to literacy efforts across Guyana, the Ministry of Education has unveiled its new “Libraries for Primary Schools” initiative.
This program, marking International Literacy Day and Education Month 2024, aims to enhance reading resources in primary schools nationwide by equipping each institution with a well-stocked library.
The launch event was held at Grove Primary School on the East Bank of Demerara, where it was announced that each primary school will receive a library containing over 400 carefully selected books.
This move is part of a broader strategy to improve educational resources and support student development.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand detailed that while the initial phase of the initiative focuses on primary schools, plans are underway to extend similar resources to secondary schools in the future.
This effort is designed to ensure that students of all ages have access to appropriate reading materials that will support their educational growth.
The program aims to not only provide students with access to a variety of books but also to encourage a culture of reading and learning.
The Ministry of Education hopes that by making these resources available, students will be better equipped to develop strong reading skills and a lifelong interest in literature.
Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their children’s reading habits, making use of the new libraries to further support their children’s education.
With this initiative, the Ministry of Education continues its commitment to enhancing educational resources and supporting student literacy across the country.
