In an effort to enhance the effectiveness of the school supplies cash grant program, the Ministry of Education has implemented several improvements.
Distribution of the cash grant commenced as scheduled, with detailed plans for disbursement across the country.
This year, a total of $1.8 billion will be disbursed to schools nationwide to cover expenses for the Easter and May/June Terms.
Under the program, teachers on the coastland will receive $4,500 per student per term, while those in the hinterland will receive $5,500 per student per term.
Minister Manickchand provided a breakdown of the disbursement, explaining that for nursery and primary schools along the coast, teachers will receive $3,500 per student, with $1,000 allocated to the school’s administrative department for common area expenses.
Monies for secondary schools will be given to Heads of Department, who will consult with their teachers to determine the required items.
One significant improvement made to the program’s implementation is the flexibility in purchasing.
Now operating under the line of subvention and grants, the program allows for more flexibility in what teachers can purchase.
Minister Manickchand highlighted these changes, emphasizing the need for transparency. Teachers are still required to present receipts for their purchases to ensure accountability.
Distribution of the grant began at the Anna Regina Secondary School and Abram Zuil Secondary School, with auditors present to ensure transparency and accountability.
However, Minister Manickchand noted challenges with school bank accounts, expressing hope for improvement by September to streamline the grant transfer process.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting education and providing resources to enhance learning environments across the country.
With these enhancements, the Ministry of Education aims to facilitate a more efficient and transparent distribution process for the benefit of educators and students alike.
