In an effort to combat low literacy levels, particularly exacerbated by learning disruptions caused by the pandemic, the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Literacy Department, organized its first-ever Literacy Village along Main Street Avenue.
Tracy Ally, the Regional Literacy Coordinator for Georgetown, explained that the purpose of this initiative was to familiarize the public and, by extension, teachers with innovative teaching techniques proven to enhance children’s literacy skills both in the classroom and at home.
Roxxane Blair, a teacher at the J.E. Burnham Primary School, expressed her enthusiasm for the intervention.
She highlighted that it provides an opportunity to explore various activities and strategies that can significantly contribute to literacy development and reading comprehension.
The Literacy Village featured reading corners for children, interactive sessions with students, sight words booths, and a range of engaging activities.
The event was held under the theme “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies.”
This initiative follows the celebration of International Literacy Day in September, which coincided with Education Month.
