Ministry of Education Hosts Inaugural Literacy Village

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the National Literacy Department, recently organized its first-ever Literacy Village along Main Street in Georgetown.

This initiative aims to address the low literacy levels in Guyana, particularly in light of the learning loss caused by the pandemic.

The Literacy Village provided a platform for students, teachers, and parents to explore innovative teaching techniques employed in classrooms.

Tracy Ally, the Regional Literacy Coordinator for Georgetown, highlighted that the event was an opportunity for the public and teachers to acquire innovative teaching skills that can benefit children both in the classroom and at home.

Roxxane Blair, a teacher at the J.E. Burnham Primary School, expressed her enthusiasm for the intervention, emphasizing its positive impact on children’s comprehension and literacy development.

The event, held under the theme “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies,” featured various activities including reading corners for children, interactive sessions with students, sight word booths, and more.

This Literacy Village initiative follows the celebration of International Literacy Day in September, which was part of Education Month.
