Ministry of Agriculture Procures 100 Shade Houses to Boost Youth Involvement in Agriculture

In a move to encourage young people’s participation in agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), has acquired one hundred shade houses.

This announcement was made by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha at the World Food Day ceremony and exhibition held at the GCC ground.

Minister Mustapha emphasized that these shade houses are equipped with modernized features, including drip irrigation systems.

This technology allows for precise control of water delivery to plant roots through timers, representing a more efficient and controlled approach to agriculture.

The minister also urged farmers to adopt drip irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting techniques to effectively manage water resources for agricultural purposes, especially in the face of dry spells exacerbated by El Niño weather conditions.

Drip irrigation systems significantly reduce water wastage by directly supplying water to the crop’s root zone.

Rainfall harvesting, on the other hand, involves capturing and storing rainwater for agricultural use, reducing dependency on groundwater and surface sources.

Minister Mustapha affirmed his commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders, including the private sector and farmers, to establish and maintain an integrated water resource management system.

Additionally, he will represent Guyana and the region in an upcoming panel discussion in Iowa, USA, addressing critical water-related issues.
