Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, provided insights into the progress and challenges encountered in the ongoing modernization efforts of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) during a recent update to NCN News.
Speaking on the half-year performance review of various programs and projects, Benn highlighted both achievements and areas needing improvement in enhancing law enforcement capabilities and public safety.
Benn emphasized the significant transformation and investments made in the GPF, marking it as the most substantial in over 80 years.
He pointed to the establishment of new police headquarters and stations, essential for contemporary policing as outlined by the Commissioner.
Acknowledging the persistent challenges posed by transnational organized crime and emerging threats, Benn expressed gratitude for the support received from international partners and local security entities.
He underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships and engage with the public to achieve tangible improvements in security and policing.
Despite these challenges, Benn reported a noteworthy 17% reduction in serious crimes within the reporting period.
He attributed this decline to enhanced community policing initiatives, improved empathy in law enforcement practices, and proactive crime prevention measures.
However, Benn also acknowledged areas requiring attention, including traffic management, addressing instances of murder, and managing disorderly behavior.
He assured ongoing efforts through various projects and programs aimed at tackling these issues comprehensively.
