In a recent interview with HJ Radio, Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr. expressed his belief that with the right support, Guyana has the potential to earn a medal at the 2028 Olympic Games.
Ramson’s optimism stems from the conviction that with adequate backing, local athletes can compete at the highest level and bring home medals.
Reflecting on Guyana’s sporting history, Ramson noted that the country’s sole Olympic medal was earned by Michael Parris in boxing at the 1980 Olympic Games in Russia.
However, he envisions a future where Guyana’s athletes can achieve even greater success on the international stage.
The minister highlighted the government’s commitment to sports development, citing significant investments made to advance the sector.
Ramson emphasized that these investments are crucial for nurturing talent and fostering the growth of sports in Guyana.
Earlier this year, as part of the national budget, the government allocated 4.6 billion dollars for the advancement of sports in the country, with a substantial portion designated for the upgrading of sports grounds in various regions.
This substantial financial commitment underscores the government’s dedication to supporting athletes and enhancing sports infrastructure nationwide.
As Guyana looks ahead to the 2028 Olympics, Minister Ramson’s vision and determination serve as a rallying call for the nation’s sporting community.
With continued investment, support, and dedication, Guyana aims to build on its past achievements and make its mark on the global stage of athletics.
