As part of its 41st anniversary celebrations, the Guyana Prison Service hosted its annual ‘Prisoners in Concert’ event on Sunday at the National Cultural Centre, showcasing the government’s commitment to prisoner rehabilitation and reintegration.
The concert featured performances by inmates and staff that addressed key social issues, including domestic violence, sexual harassment, alcoholism, and HIV awareness.
Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives to improve prison conditions and prepare inmates for a successful return to society.
He emphasized that, despite the hardships many inmates have experienced, the prison service is dedicated to supporting their transformation and helping them become productive members of the community.
Minister Benn also stressed the importance of collaboration between prison staff, inmates, and their families in the rehabilitation process, aligning this mission with the broader national goal of building a stronger Guyana.
This year’s anniversary theme, “Year of Transformation,” reinforces the government’s focus on creating meaningful change within the prison system.
The event underscores the Ministry of Home Affairs’ dedication to a rehabilitative approach, as Guyana continues to reshape its correctional facilities to support positive outcomes for all involved.
