During a sitting of the National Assembly on Monday, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, dismissed allegations from the opposition regarding maternal deaths in Guyana.
The accusations were made by former Health Minister Dr. Karen Cummings, who claimed the Ministry had failed in its prenatal care efforts.
Dr. Anthony responded by presenting statistics showing a steady decline in maternal deaths over the past few years.
He highlighted that in 2018, there were 20 obstetric deaths, which decreased to 17 in both 2022 and 2023, and further declined to 14 in 2024.
Additionally, Dr. Anthony rejected claims of maternal deaths at the New Amsterdam and Suddie hospitals, stating that while three maternal deaths occurred in 2025, none took place at those hospitals.
The Minister emphasized the significant improvements in the healthcare sector under the current administration and reassured that the government remains committed to investing in building a world-class healthcare system.
