By Samuel Gillis

Public Affairs Minister Kwame McCoy recently embarked on a visit to communities along the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) to discuss the government’s development plans and the allocations made in the 2024 national budget.

During his visit, Minister McCoy emphasized the government’s commitment to education and the welfare of the nation’s children.

He highlighted the significant increase in expenditure in the education sector, noting that the budget for education has risen from $52 billion in 2019 to $135.2 billion Guyana dollars today.

Minister McCoy emphasized that this substantial allocation reflects the government’s priority on investing in education.

Additionally, Minister McCoy addressed investments in healthcare services along the East Bank of Demerara, specifically mentioning the Diamond Regional Hospital.

He emphasized the government’s efforts to improve healthcare facilities to better serve communities in the region.

Regarding the rising cost of living, Minister McCoy assured residents that the government is taking measures to cushion its effects.

He explained that maintaining the excise tax on fuel at zero is aimed at keeping the cost of living down, as fuel prices impact the prices of various goods and services.

Minister McCoy also cautioned communities against misconceptions about Guyana’s wealth, highlighting that significant revenue from the petroleum sector will only start to materialize in the next seven years.

He emphasized that Guyana is on the path to prosperity but urged citizens to remain vigilant and realistic about the country’s financial situation.

Minister McCoy’s engagement with East Bank Demerara communities underscores the government’s commitment to transparency and inclusivity in its development initiatives.

By directly interacting with citizens, the government aims to ensure that their voices are heard and their concerns addressed in the nation’s progress.
